AfriThrive appoints Ms. Tanya Spandhla Farm, Food Education Manager

Tanya Doka-Spandhla has been appointed the new Farm & Food Education Manager for AfriThrive, with immediate effect. Tanya is a dedicated farmer, a community advocate, and the founder and owner of Passion To Seed Gardening in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

With over 10+ years of hands-on experience, Tanya has successfully established and managed her own farm, demonstrating her expertise in sustainable farming practices.

Tanya’s passion for promoting food security and sustainable agriculture extends beyond her farm. She actively contributes to various organizations and initiatives, including serving as an Alumni Council Member for the Montgomery County (MoCo) Food Council and as a Board Member of the Montgomery Countryside Alliance, where she works to preserve and promote the agricultural heritage of the region.

Her commitment to supporting those in need is exemplified through her participation in the Farm-to-Food Bank Program, facilitated by Manna Food.

Tanya has also initiated “The Hope and Resilience Garden” at a women’s shelter in Gaithersburg, MD, providing fresh produce and empowering residents with valuable gardening skills.

Before embarking on her farming journey, Tanya worked as a Information Communications Technology (ICT) professional in major financial institutions and government defense contractors, bringing a unique blend of technical expertise and agricultural knowledge to her endeavors.

Originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, Tanya’s passion for farming began in her parent’s backyard and has flourished in the DMV area.

Her dedication and accomplishments have been recognized by esteemed publications such as The Washington Post, Washingtonian Magazine, Plenty Magazine, PBS, Baltimore Sun, and more.

We are confident that Tanya Doka-Spandhla’s unwavering commitment to sustainable farming practices, community engagement, and empowering others through agriculture will make her an invaluable asset as our Farm and Food Education Manager.
