Our Programs

AfriThrive’s programs grow health, heritage, and community through food access, gardening, and culturally relevant education.

This is your chance to grow a movement.

Rooted in Culture. Grown by Community. Powered by You.

At AfriThrive, we believe that thriving families grow from strong roots, food, culture, community, and opportunity. Each of our programs is designed to nourish the body, celebrate our heritage, and create long-term change. And it all begins with people like you.

A Community Gardening + Fundraising Campaign to Plant Seeds of Change

Grow With Us

Grow With Us is more than a gardening program — it’s our signature giving campaign that launches every spring on Earth Day. When you support this initiative, you’re not just growing tomatoes; you’re helping us grow food justice, education, and access for families across our region.

How It Works:

  • Make a donation to receive your free tomato seedlings

  • Use our Growing Guide to plant at home or with your children

  • Share your garden journey using #GrowWithAfriThrive

  • Know that your gift helps us expand food programs, school gardens, and our community farm

Why It Matters:
Each donation helps us:

  • Provide fresh, culturally appropriate food to families

  • Equip schools with garden tools and curriculum

  • Host hands-on workshops at our farm and in the community

Where Culture and Cultivation Meet

AfriThrive Cultural Farm

Our Poolesville farm is more than land; it’s a classroom, a celebration space, and a hub for intergenerational learning. Here, families grow culturally significant crops like saga, managu, and pumpkin leaves while reconnecting with the land and each other.

The farm offers:

  • Cultural crop cultivation and seasonal planting events

  • School field trips and youth volunteer days

  • Hands-on education for families of all backgrounds

When you visit the farm, you’re stepping into living heritage.

Healing with Every Bite. Rooted in African Wisdom.

Food as Medicine

At AfriThrive, we believe that food is more than nourishment — it’s memory, healing, and power. Through Food as Medicine, we celebrate traditional African foods while educating families and communities on how these dishes support long-term health.

This program includes:

  • Downloadable recipes like kale salad, callaloo, and pumpkin soup

  • Wellness cooking classes with local Chefs

  • School and clinic partnerships that bring healing food to the people who need it most

Your support helps spread food knowledge across generations.

Culturally Appropriate, Nutrient-Dense, and Community-Based

Food Access & Distribution

Every month, AfriThrive distributes food across Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Baltimore counties, always with dignity, cultural relevance, and health in mind.

Our approach includes:

  • Fresh, culturally appropriate produce and pantry staples

  • Nutrition education and healthy eating tips

  • Pop-up pantries and special seasonal events

Food is a right. Your support helps us make it a reality.

Sparking Curiosity and Cultural Pride Through Growing

School & Youth Gardening

We equip schools and youth groups with the tools, seeds, and support to teach children how to grow food and grow confidence. These gardens become classrooms that teach sustainability, science, and culture all in one.

We provide:

  • School garden kits and planting support

  • Custom lesson plans aligned to science and health standards

  • Opportunities for student-led projects and peer learning

Every school garden is a seedbed for future leaders.
