In the heart of Aspen Hill, a shining example of hope and service radiates brightly at the AfriThrive’s Food Distribution Center, where Octavian Setiawan who goes by the name Danny, a dedicated volunteer, has been making a significant impact since March 2023. With a spirit ignited by a desire to give back and personal encouragement from his mother, Danny, a student at Montgomery College embarked on a journey that not only changed his life but also the lives of those he serves.

The Journey Begins

Danny’s journey with AfriThrive began in an unusual manner. With a longing to make meaningful use of his ample free time during his first year of college, and at his mother’s behest, Danny sought a volunteer opportunity that resonated with his desire to be of service to others. AfriThrive’s mission caught his eye, and without hesitation, he started volunteering on his very first day of arrival in March. This decision marked the beginning of an enriching journey of service and self-discovery.

A New Perspective on Community

Before joining AfriThrive, Danny admits his view of the community was different. However, the experience of working closely with the community members and other volunteers transformed his perspective. He now sees the community as social, supportive, friendly, and profoundly unified. “It’s through different circumstances that we find ourselves unified,” Danny reflects. The thriving nature of the community, bolstered by the support from AfriThrive, has left a lasting impression on him.

His initial goal of gaining experience through volunteering evolved into a deeper, more personal mission. “The more I serve, the more invested I become,” Danny shares, highlighting the joy and fulfillment he finds in serving others. This transformation showcases the profound impact volunteering can have on an individual’s life perspective and priorities.

The Drive to Volunteer at AfriThrive

The motivation behind Danny’s decision to start volunteering stems from his mother’s encouragement to stay engaged and make productive use of his time as a part-time college student. Little did he know, this advice would steer him towards a path of selfless service and community engagement. Volunteering at AfriThrive has become more than just a pastime for Danny; it has turned into a passion and a commitment to serving for as long as he can.

A Heart of Service

Danny’s story is a testament to the power of volunteering and its ability to transform both the lives of those who give and those who receive. His journey from seeking a way to fill his free time to becoming a dedicated volunteer at AfriThrive illustrates the unexpected paths through which we can find purpose and joy. Danny’s dedication and transformative experience serve as an inspiration to us all, highlighting the impact one individual can make in the lives of many.

As we celebrate Danny’s contributions and the vibrant community spirit at AfriThrive, we are reminded of the significant impact volunteering can have on our lives and the world around us. Danny’s story is not just one of service but also of personal growth, community support, and the relentless pursuit of making a difference. Through his actions, Danny embodies the essence of AfriThrive’s mission and serves as a beacon of hope and service in the Aspen Hill community.
