Anna Mwalagho Joins Taste of Africa
We are thrilled to welcome Anna Mwalagho to the very first Taste of Africa. Known around the world as the Queen of Spoken Afrobeat and affectionately called Mama Africa, Anna is a performer like no other. She blends comedy, poetry, music, storytelling, dance, and theater into a powerful experience that is as entertaining as it is inspiring.
Anna’s one-woman shows have touched audiences across the globe. Millions have watched her on social media, and she has graced stages from The Kennedy Center to the Smithsonian during President Obama’s inauguration. Her work is a celebration of African identity and resilience, weaving humor and lyrical truth into stories that uplift and empower.
Beyond the stage, Anna is also an educator, activist, and philanthropist. She founded the Upendo Educational Foundation USA, supporting vulnerable children in Nairobi’s Huruma slums through education and love. She is also a professor at Howard University, where she continues to mentor and inspire the next generation of artists and thinkers.
Her creative legacy includes three musical albums, a published book of poetry, a comedy and spoken word DVD collection, and her acclaimed one-woman play Never Thought I Was Black Until I Came to America. She has shared the stage with legends like Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi, bringing the spirit of Afrobeat and African storytelling to audiences everywhere.
On September 27, Anna will bring her unmatched energy to Taste of Africa in Germantown, Maryland. This will be a night of food, music, storytelling, and art that celebrates culture and community. Her performance promises to be a highlight of our first-year celebration.
